Case Study

iskills/Avetta

iskills/Avetta partnered with Optimism to develop online health & safety refresher modules, reducing the cost to deliver this training in person.

About our Client

iskills/Avetta is a multi-award winning and accredited training provider, specialising in the infrastructure industry. They provide a range of face to face and online training courses and assessments to help keep workers safe, competent and compliant in their fields of expertise.

Their Brief

iskills/Avetta were looking for a partner to develop online refresher modules for their health and safety qualifications, which were workshop based. They wanted to help organisations maintain safe working practices as well as reduce the time and cost associated with traditional training methods.

The refreshers needed to enable employees to keep safety top of mind, identify and address any gaps in their safety knowledge, embed new or updated requirements, and maintain safe working practices. The modules had to be interesting and engaging to experienced workers in the field while meeting industry compliance standards.

Our Role

Our concept for this project was a suite of applied modules with contextual interactions and rich media for a hands-on workforce. We took a microlearning approach and began by chunking the workshop content into 36 micro modules. By structuring them this way we were able to focus on the need-to-know and maximise engagement and retention. It also allows the micro modules to be put together in different combinations for cross-industry refresher training.

The module content was developed in close collaboration with the iskills/Avetta technical trainers, ensuring accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness. We used contextualised photography and video to create interactive and realistic simulations to enable transfer of learning to the job. Scenario questions were aligned with the decisions that the learner would make in real life to ensure the activities are as relatable as possible.

The modules were developed to be hosted on iskills/Avetta’s learning management system where they can track and monitor successful completions and send automated reminders for renewals.

Their Results

iskills/Avetta  now has a flexible set of health & safety micro mods that:

  • offers personalised self-paced learning experiences
  • tracks progress to ensure effective skill development
  • has significantly reduced time spent off-job for refresher training
  • has eliminated the cost of travel and need for trainers to mark written assessments

This set of micro mods has also enabled iskills/Avetta to expand their reach to a  range sectors through combining the mods in different ways to cater to various  qualifications.
