Coastguard Boating Education

Learn how Optimism transformed boating education with Coastguard by creating a new mobile-friendly course for boaties.

About our Client

Coastguard Boating Education (CBE) is the leading provider of recreational boating education in New Zealand. The organisation is registered as a Private Training Establishment with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

The Brief

CBE were looking for delivery of an exciting new mobile friendly course that didn’t exist within CBE’s catalogue of boating education courses.

From CBE’s perspective, the online course needed to:

  • Engage inexperienced boaties and passengers
  • Be downloadable to a mobile phone
  • Be purchasable as a gift and redeemed using a unique code
  • Double as a resource library
  • Use rich content and show users real situations

Our Role

Online functionality
We have worked with CBE to deliver ground-breaking online projects for several years now so we jumped at the opportunity to develop an exciting new mobile-friendly course that didn’t exist within CBE’s catalogue of boating education courses.

We started with a co-design session to determine how best to present the solution from a technical perspective and then created a wireframe of the journey as a user.

Content & media creation
Once we had the proof of concept working we worked closely with CBE to create the content.

We had a lot of fun jumping into swimming pools and testing lifejackets to show users the real experience of how certain situations would feel and what they can do to help themselves feel more comfortable.

Distribution
Having had great success with the VHF voucher system we wanted to ensure a user-friendly way for people to purchase the course as a gift card and redeem this for access without having to build a whole new interface.

Authorisation
We evaluated the user journey and designed a purpose-built process to allow users access to the module immediately upon redeeming an enrolment code.

We spent a long time looking at the ideal method of redeeming a code from physical gift cards and how to create single-use unique codes that are easily generated and redeemed from a single application.

The Results

An interactive module, optimized for mobile with rich media and practice activities.

The Beginning Boating course is a ~45 minute interactive online module, which helps inexperienced boaties and passengers to feel confident on the water and be informed enough to speak up if something isn’t quite right.

The module is optimized for mobile, but also responsive across tablet and desktop, and can be saved directly to the users’ device for ease of access.

It covers the general features of a vessel, lifejackets and other safety equipment, how to communicate out on the water, what it feels like on a boat, and what to do if something goes wrong.

It reports back to CBE’s existing LMS and uses a customised plug in to redeem physical gift cards.

Gift cards are available from outlets across NZ with a scratch panel to reveal a unique enrolment code. The anticipation of this product was so high that there were even pre-sales.
