Case Study

HRNZ

HRNZ collaborated with Optimism to create self-assessments for HR practitioners to apply for Chartered Membership.

About our Client

The Human Resources Institute of New Zealand(HRNZ) is the professional body for HR professionals. HRNZ promotes excellence in HR practices and offers professional development opportunities, networking events, and a range of HR-related services to their members.

Their Brief

HRNZ had recently designed a new capability framework to reflect the unique demands on HR practitioners in Aotearoa.  With this redeveloped framework came new criteria to become a Chartered Member of HRNZ. HRNZ wished to create a self-assessment against the new criteria that would support and encourage HR practitioners to apply for Chartered Membership.

The self-assessment results needed to show the practitioner clearly which areas of their expertise met requirements for Chartered Membership and which areas they would need to develop before applying.

The self-assessment also needed to be hosted on the HRNZ website and be openly available.

Our Role

We started by collaborating with HRNZ leaders to write capability statements for the six new Core Capabilities against a self-rating scale.

Next, we designed an HTML tool with reporting mechanics to generate a self-assessment report. We developed the report to display the HR practitioner’s core capability ratings in a circumplex chart together with a text summary.

On completing the self-assessment, HR practitioners are able to see specifically where they meet the threshold for Chartering and where they need to develop, on a visually appealing chart.  From the summary they can ascertain their readiness to apply for Chartered Membership and advice for next steps. Practitioners can download their report pdf to form part of their application or as a reference for professional development.

Their Results

HRNZ now have a capability tool that:

  • enables them to set a threshold for Chartered Membership applicants
  • supports the growth of Chartered Memberships by encouraging eligible practitioners to apply
  • encourages emerging practitioners to access developmental resources
  • streamlines the application process for Chartered Membership through inclusion of the self-assessment report
