Construction Health & Safety NZ (CHASNZ)

ConstructSafe - H&S Online Assessments.

About our Client

Construction Health & Safety NZ (CHASNZ) is a charitable trust formed to provide leadership of health and safety in the construction industry, with the aim of creating a more competent workforce and in turn driving a more efficient industry.

One of their initiatives (instigated by the former Construction Safety Council) is ConstructSafe.

ConstructSafe is an online health and safety competency assessment.  It provides a consistent and transparent way to check the competency of any worker, trade specialist, supervisor, or manager on site (regardless of employer).  The purpose is to provide industry-standard reassurance that workers are competent and safe to work on site.

Their Brief

ConstructSafe is based on international best-practice frameworks, with four tiers of:

  1. General site worker
  2. Trade-specific
  3. Supervisory
  4. Managerial levels.

The Level 1 general assessment had been completed, and Optimism was approached to develop assessments at Levels 2 and 4.

Our Role

In order to prepare each assessment, we reviewed the relevant framework and determined the appropriate segmenting and weighting of that question pool.

After reviewing all the related industry documents and material available, and consulting with role-based subject matter experts (for context and scenarios), we drafted 250 questions for each assessment along with their associated illustrations or photos.

After technical reviews by subject matter experts, we refined the assessment question pool for user testing, edited and finalised based on industry feedback, and provided it to CSC for uploading to their online assessment platform.

Their Results

With Optimism’s input, CHASNZ is now able to offer a range of health & safety assessments across the ConstructSafe tiers (from general through to scaffolding, through to project/contract manager) helping to ensure the safety competency of site workers throughout the industry.
